Plant Management Network News Number 119: December 28, 2011     From the Network Get a Sneak Peek of PMN’s First Grant Outreach Webcast The Plant Management Network is pleased to announce its first grant outreach webcast, titled “Gray Leaf Spot” by Dr. Alison Robertson of Iowa State University.  This is the first in a series of four USDA grant-funded presentations that will cover various diseases of corn.  In addition to educating practitioners and applied scientists on the topic, this webcast leads readers to other resources that are funded, at least in part, by this same multi-state grant.  In early January, PMN will publish this webcast in Focus on Corn and release it to the corn industry through various channels. The Plant Management Network is an ideal place for housing applied grant outreach information.  PMN, an organization jointly managed by the American Phytopathological Society, American Society of Agronomy, and Crop Science Society of America, offers permanence, neutrality, cost-effectiveness, high impact, and publishing expertise. PMN Reaches Nearly 406,000 Individuals in 2011 PMN is finishing off a record year in terms of readership. PMN reached a total of 405,909 unique individuals between January 1, 2011 and December 27, 2011. This is nearly a 13% gain in readership over the previous calendar year, during which time PMN logged nearly 360,000 unique individuals. PMN to Produce Short-length Webcasts for Soybean Producers Thanks to support from the United Soybean Board and the Soybean Checkoff, PMN will begin producing “executive summary” versions for each new Focus on Soybean webcast, starting in January.  These webcasts, which will run 1.5 to 5 minutes in length, will offer a short synopsis of the webcast’s full-length version, plus bottom line management information that is particularly of interest to practitioners in the field.   Focus on Potato Webcast Covers Bacterial Ring Rot Bacterial ring rot is one of the most feared diseases of potato because of the devastating losses it can cause. The latest Focus on Potato webcast, titled “Bacterial Ring Rot of Potato” by Dr. Neil Gudmestad of North Dakota State University, addresses the identification and management of this disease. The presentation covers symptoms, detection methods, and disease management strategies. This webcast will be open access through February 29, 2012.
