Farm to Fork Family Picnic at Hunsader Farms has moved to May 15: To maximize the exposure of this event, we have moved the date from May 1 to May 15. This event is geared toward families to help them get closer to their food source and assist parents in exposing their children to healthy food. The ticket price hasn't been set, but we're expecting adult tickets at $30-$35, children between 6 and 12 at $8-$12 and children under 5 will be free. There will be activities for the whole family so mark your calendars!
Crops Continue to Mature: All crops continue to mature on schedule and more new items reach maturity. Overall, farmers can't ask for too much more. No reports of insect pressure or nutrient deficiencies.
A Couple Farms Have Joined Us: Check out offering from Utopia Farms and Affloter Farm. Utopia Farms is has operations in Homestead, Sarasota and Manatee Counties. This conventional farming operation is one of the largest farms we work with, they normally sell to grocery stores across the country. We met a while back and we're testing to see how this will work since they normally deal in tractor/trailer loads, not cases. We're going to start with some of their peppers and see how it goes. Affloter Farm is a the opposite. Covering about 1/4 acre, Owner Don Affloter is just getting his hydroponic operation off the ground and the first results were impressive. Both a fine examples of the type farmers we have in our area!
Last Week for: Cut Lettuce (Watercress Farms)
New this week: Watermelon, butternut squash, Acorn Squash, Corn (Hunsader Farms) Anahiem Peppers, Bell Peppers, Tequila Peppers (King Farm) Watermelon Radish (Affolter Farms) Banana Peppers and Cherry Bomb Peppers (Utopia Farms) Herticot vert (Suncoast Nursery).
