Natural Resources Opportunites series

Below you will find information being offered through a multi-state effort entitled Natural Resource Opportunities for Southern Landowner.  If there is enough interest in the program we will offer it at the Manatee County Extension Office.  At this time we are trying to see how many people would be interested in participating.  If we have enough to make a class we will forward more information to you.  If you are available on the following evenings from 7 – 8:30pm and would be interested in participating please contact Crystal or Jennifer to sign up.  There may be a small fee to cover expenses and refreshments.  You can see the class information below.

Session 1: Introduction to Natural Resource Conservation

October 11, 2012 (7:00 pm- 8:30 pm)

(Presenter: Dr. Patrick McMillan, Director of Campbell Museum of Natural History, Clemson University, Host of ETV Expeditions)

Session focuses on the history of natural resources and conservation/management across the southern landscape up until today.

•             Definition of natural resources

•             Examples of natural resources

•             History of natural resource conservation and management

•             Factors that have shaped the natural resource landscape that we see today

•             Evolution of a natural resources conservation ethic

•             Physiographical regions of the South and natural resource communities

•             The North American model of natural resource conservation

•             Natural resource management in a changing environmental, economic and social era

Session 2: Natural Resources Enterprise Considerations for Your Land

October 18, 2012 (7:00 pm- 8:30 pm)

(Presenter: Dr. Daryl Jones, Associate Professor, Natural Resources Enterprise Program, Mississippi State University)

Session overviews opportunities for landowners to manage their natural resource(s) for revenue

•             Definition of a natural resource enterprise

•             Examples of natural resource enterprises (fee hunting, fee fishing, horse trail riding, wildlife watching, forestry/agritourism, bed and breakfast, others)

•             Revenue potential for natural resource enterprises

•             Developing a natural resource enterprise

•             Development of a business plan

•             Liability and legal concerns

•             Case study examples

•             Available resources

Session 3: Wildlife Conservation on Your Land

October 25, 2012 (7:00 pm- 8:30 pm)

Session gives an overview of wildlife conservation

•             Defining wildlife management goals

Session gives an overview of forest management

•             Managing for timber revenue

Session focuses on identifying, understanding and managing for appreciative natural resource values on private land

•             Defining natural resource appreciative value goals

•             Overview of select cast studies and projects

•             Available resources

•             Overview of the Master Naturalist Program and program coordinators in the South
