SWD Article; Cold this weekend; Blueberry Field Day Reminder

Greetings,

Just wanted to send along a few notes:

Dr. Oscar Liburd has recently published an article focusing on the monitoring and management of spotted wing Drosophila (SWD).  This pest was present in damaging populations in blueberry production regions such as Georgia and Michigan in 2012.  SWD has been observed in Florida for the past few seasons but only reported at damaging populations in a few farms.  The potential to be a damaging pest is there and it is probably a good idea to monitor and treat for this pest as necessary.  Dr. Liburd will be making a presentation on SWD at the 2013 UF/IFAS Blueberry Field Day on February 21 in Umatilla.  Please follow the link below to Dr. Liburd’s article:

At this time, NWS Models are indicating a cool down starting at the end of the work week and extending through the weekend.  At this time, lows for most of central Florida look like they will be slightly above critical temperatures for blueberry fruit.  It is important for growers to monitor this weather system, as the expected low temperature outlook can change significantly in the next 4 or 5 days.

This is a reminder that the UF/IFAS Extension Central Florida Blueberry Field Day will take place on Thursday, February 21, 2013 at Spring Valley Farm near Umatilla, with registration at 11:00 AM and program starting at 11:30.  We have obtained CCA CEUs and request for pesticide CEUs has been submitted.  Follow the link below for Agenda information and pre-registration instructions.  Pre-registration is required to plan for the sponsored lunch.
