HEARTLAND CISMA NEWS & UPCOMING EVENTS:

1)      SAVE THE DATE (date TBA): EDRR field workshop to be held at Lake Kissimmee State Park for a few hours sometime between June 20-30. Your Heartland CISMA steering committee is working on dates right now and will send a sign-up link as soon as it's finalized. The aim of the workshop is to see two EDRR species, Scleria microcarpa (tropical nutrush) and Ardisia crenata (coral ardisia) in the field, with a focus on identification and treatment, and also with a decontamination stop and talk in between. We're working on CEUs too.

2)      SAVE THE DATE: Ludwigia ID and Aquatic Grass ID workshops, October 18th, Circle B Bar Reserve. You asked and we're providing two workshops on the same day to focus on two challenging topics. We'll send out sign-up information for both as soon as it's available. The plan is to have a morning workshop teasing out those Ludwigia species, a break for lunch, and then an afternoon workshop focused on aquatic grasses. We're looking to get CEUs for both of these too, and you can attend one or both via signing up.

3)      The Heartland CISMA steering committee has other projects in the works, and you're welcome to participate. If you're interested in HalloWeed, a 2-week push to get more credible invasive species data entered into EDDMapS, there is a statewide call on June 1st at 2:30 pm, here's the info to sign up:

Please register using the eventbrite linked here

conference call can be accessed by calling 407-665-1779

Conference ID:            28967

4)      And, we'd like to put together a spooky invasives field trip for Halloween, so if you have creative ideas or would like to help us come up with some, contact me or just attend our next steering committee in August (we'll send out the date when it's set).

WEBINARS, EVENTS

5)      Monthly CISMA calls: The next call will be May 24th 1:30-2:30 about Coordinating the state-wide implementation of a biological control of weeds program (Carey Minteer) and the Osceola CISMA. Call-in information is sent via the Florida CISMAs list, so if you are not on it, contact Rose Godfrey (coordinator@floridainvasives.org). To watch and listen to the recordings of any past calls, go to: https://www.floridainvasives.org/cismacalls.html

6)      "New Online Resources for Revegetation Practitioners" webinar June 7th at noon. Matt Horning, Plant Geneticist, USDA Forest Service will show off the latest updates to the U.S. Forest Service and Federal Highways Administration guide to revegetation. The information is applicable to anyone working on highly disturbed sites or on revegetation projects, and the updates will include pollinator-specific guidance and an expanded scope that includes the whole U.S. Register now

7)      SAVE the DATE October 18-19th! The FLTWS Fall Meeting and Grass Identification Workshop. Flyer attached.

REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION:

8)      Data and perspective sought about 5 key species for predictive model- Brian Crawford at the University of Georgia is working on a longleaf at-risk species conservation project to inform where and how to invest resources for 5 at-risk species in longleaf habitat. Those species are: gopher tortoise, gopher frog, striped newt, southern hognose snake, and Florida pine snake. He is working with many federal, state and other organizations, but he is looking for species data on lands not yet in his database. He is looking for any species location data (lat-longs and associated observation notes) for those 5 species to be used in comprehensive models for species statuses across their ranges. For more information and if you think you may have information to contribute, here is his Presentation, and he is at bcrawfor@uga.edu .

9)      At the Central Florida Invasive Species Workshop there was discussion that there is still not good evidence that cogongrass spreads by viable seeds, and not just vegetatively. Greg MacDonald at UF is looking for that evidence and you can help by collecting cogongrass seedheads using the attached protocol and including the attached permit in the shipment mailed to:

Greg MacDonald

Professor of Agronomy and Weed Science

Contact him if you have questions at 352-294-1594 or pineacre@ufl.edu

10)   Forestiera segregata samples sought- Dr. Don Cipollini, professor of plant physiology and chemical ecology at Wright State University and also our keynote speaker at the FLEPPC 2017 Conference is requesting Forestiera segregata samples.  A box of two-foot long stems 2-3 inches in diameter from about 10 separate trees would be enough for him to do a pilot experiment to test for emerald ash borer suitability.  Wright State will cover shipping costs.  He can be contacted at: Don.cipollini@wright.edu
