The Vegetable Production group at the University of Rhode Island has an opening for a graduate assistant (MS or PhD) to work on a project developing laser scarecrows for control of pest birds in peri-urban production systems. The ideal candidate would have a background in Horticulture and an interest in robotics/hobby electronics/Maker activities.
The URI Vegetable Production group is an integrated research/extension/teaching program within the Department of Plant Sciences and Entomology and the Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems specialization of the Biological and Environmental Sciences graduate program. We focus on small to medium scale vegetable production for direct marketing into the local food system.
The assistantship will be a combination teaching/research assistantship. Students who are able to provide TA support for classes in plant propagation, plant ID, livestock management, or human anatomy and physiology have a competitive advantage. Stipend is $28,673 per calendar year and includes a full tuition waiver, health insurance, and partial coverage of student fees. Applications are due by January 15, 2018 for students to begin in May or September 2018.
