Heartland CISMA grass ID workshop- Attached is the flyer for the Oct. 16th grass ID workshop at Archbold Biological Station and the sign-ups are live at https://grassworkshop101613.eventbrite.com . It is limited to 40 people, so don’t wait to sign up if you’re interested. We’ll have a focus on native and grazing pasture grasses, both native and exotic, with classroom and field sections. Instructors will include Nancy Bissett, Steve Green, Greg Hendricks and Debi Tharp and likely Pete Deal. Share this with anyone you know who may be interested and hope to see you there!
Alternate grass ID workshop- If you can’t make it to the Heartland CISMA grass ID workshop, East Central and Central Florida CISMAs are having one on Oct. 11th (see attached flyer).
Python Patrol responder/detector trainings- There are still openings for anyone wanting to participate in the Oct. 1st Python Patrol responder/detector trainings. See https://pythonpatrol100113am.eventbrite.com (morning training) or https://pythonpatrol100113pm.eventbrite.com (afternoon training) for more info. I know it is not *technically* in the Heartland CISMA since Dupuis WEA is in west Martin County on the east side of Lake Okeechobee, but it’s pretty darn close and you are welcome to attend. See the next blurb for why you should be there.
EDRR list update- This has been a long time in the works but we anticipate getting info from FNAI, thanks to FWC’s support for their work to compile candidate species lists for CISMAs. Frank Price of FNAI will be talking more about that on the monthly CISMA call Sept. 25th at 1:30 (http://www.floridainvasives.org/cismas.html for more info on how to join the call). As soon as we get it, we’ll get to work on updating our list.
Heartland CISMA update- Co-chair Keeli Carlton-Carmichael will provide an update on Heartland CISMA activities on the monthly CISMA call on Sept. 25th starting at 1:30 (http://www.floridainvasives.org/cismas.html for more info on how to join the call). Check it out!
EDDMapS alert- A Savannah monitor was captured in Polk County on Aug. 29th by the Bartow Police Department: http://www.eddmaps.org/county.cfm?sub=56254&id=us_FL_12105 . Though not known to be breeding in the wild in Florida, there have been scattered reports of Savannah monitors in Florida- check out their distribution on EDDMapS.
Air potato biocontrol in the Ledger- Tom Palmer printed a story about a school introduction of the beetles which they said was the first introduction in Polk County: http://www.theledger.com/article/20130909/news/130909259 . If you want them on your property, attached is more info about how to do that.
FWC Herbicide Bank- Finally, if you don’t already know about it, check it out at http://www.floridainvasives.org/herbicides/HerbicideBankHandbook_FY14_final.pdf . If you qualify, getting herbicide from this program can greatly reduce the cost of invasive species control projects.
If you’ve got something to share, send it on over and I’ll try to get it out with the next email update.
