There is a market trend of shifting consumer tastes in floral arrangements that makes cut flowers an opportunity for small farmers to operate a sustainable alternative enterprise. For example, a new movement called Slow Flowers is responding to consumer demand for local, seasonal, sustainably-raised flowers that represent an artisanal, anti-mass market approach to celebrations, festivals, and floral gifts of love.
This workshop will provide information on the Slow Flower movement in FL and nationwide, on the potential production of many desirable and unusual species that grow well in Florida’s warm and humid climate, and on the business of cut flowers from the field to the table and/or event.
The following topics will be presented:
- Cultural and seasonal factors in organic cut flower production in FL
- Non-native flowers production
- Native wildflowers and woody ornamentals production
- Harvest and post-harvest factors
- Business of Slow Flowers from producers to florists
- Networking and sharing of experiences
Thanks,
robert
