This is a reminder that the St. Johns River Water Management District is holding two grower focused listening sessions over the next two weeks (June 22 and 27) to obtain feedback on improving irrigation efficiency. Meeting announcement appears below:
The St. Johns River Water Management District is holding a workshop for growers and ranchers in your area. The objective of this workshop is to define a path forward for agriculture to improve irrigation efficiency in all areas of the District. We appreciate the efforts that growers have made in the past several years, but there is still a need to do more. State legislated mandates related to water supply planning and the establishment of minimum flows and levels have increased the urgency for this effort and conservation is the most cost effective way to do this.
We are seeking feedback regarding these two topics in particular:
1. How should the District best encourage improved irrigation efficiency while meeting the needs of agricultural producers? This is particularly important for growers using less efficient systems such as seepage irrigation for sod or row crops as an example.
2. What timeline is realistic to move growers to more efficient systems without causing undue business hardships?
At this time we just wish to listen, gather ideas and collaborate to develop a plan to encourage reductions in agricultural water use without adversely impacting crop or livestock production.
There will be two meetings to try to get the best possible attendance and feedback possible.
· June 22 at 6:00 pm at the Putnam county extension office at 111 Yelvington Road, East Palatka
· June 27 at 10:00 am at the Putnam county extension office at 111 Yelvington Road, East Palatka
