Announcing a new Meetup for Slow Food Greater Sarasota!

What: Taste of Lee Tropic Fruit Festival

When: Saturday, July 24, 2010 9:00 AM

Where: First Baptist Church of Ft. Myers
1735 Jackson Street 33901
Ft. Myers, FL 33901

Come experience the rare, wild and exotic at the third annual "Taste of Lee" in downtown Fort Myers.

Sponsored in part by the UF/IFAS Lee County Extension Service, and the Caloosa Rare Fruit Exchange, the event will feature all the things people loved about the previous years, but add an increased educational component.

According to Rachel Singletary, Caloosa Rare Fruit Exchange President, there will be plenty of opportunities for people to educate themselves on a myriad of topics.

She said last year the event was flooded with people asking questions, but members of the extension office were so busy they were hard to keep in one place.

"We had a lot of people come through last year and ask a lot of questions," Singletary said previously. "This year we're going to have all the extension people in one place."

Classes will include: banana propagation, pineapple production, pruning tropical fruit trees, and food preservation, among others.

Benefits of better control of reproduction in farmed fish:
Fast-growing farm-raised salmon and trout that are sterile can now be produced using a method developed by ARS scientists who say blocking reproduction can enhance growth, and is important for fish being reared in situations where reproduction is undesirable. (7/21)

Potential "early indicators" of type 2 diabetes:
Studies by an ARS physiologist are yielding new indicators, called "biomarkers," of type 2 diabetes that physicians and other healthcare professionals might be someday be able to use to identify, at an earlier stage, the children and adults who are at risk for developing this type of diabetes. (7/22)

"Super Socks" to stem pollution runoff:
ARS scientists and their collaborators have improved on an existing method for removing contaminants from storm water runoff, and their results could provide surface waters additional protection against runoff containing pollutants from point sources such as construction sites, storm waters and other urban landscapes. From the Network

PMN Celebrates 10th Anniversary!

Please join the Plant Management Network in celebrating ten years of innovative online publishing. Launched July 27, 2000, PMN began with the single journal, Plant Health Progress. In the ensuing years, three additional journals were added, Crop Management, Forage and Grazinglands, and Applied Turfgrass Science.

Other additions over time include Plant Disease Management Reports; Arthropod Management Tests; several proceedings publications; image collections; an employment and internship posting service; and searchable databases of state extension publications, plant science journals, and products and services. Its newer Focus on Potato, Focus on Soybean, and Focus on Agricultural Practitioners provide current science-based educational presentations and resources on specific crop management and protection practices.

PMN is jointly managed by the American Society of Agronomy, American Phytopathological Society, and Crop Science Society of America. Its mission is to enhance the health, management, and production of agricultural and horticultural crops.

Dimole Is Newest Industry Partner

Plant Management Network welcomes Dimole, Inc. to its industry partners program. Dimole develops and markets state-of-the-art microarray technology solutions for laboratories. Its innovative DIM-ArrayTM products allow laboratories to provide fast, reliable molecular diagnostics. These unique microarray systems for phytophthora, potato viruses, and the nitrogen cycle, enable laboratories to assay one sample for multiple diseases in one test, and display a high-throughput capacity. They present many advantages including increased disease number testing capabilities, the ability to test for dormant viruses, an internal control to avoid false negative results and the efficient turn-around time in garnering results. more>>

Please contact us to learn more about our partners program in support of PMN’s nonprofit mission to enhance the health, management, and production of agricultural and horticultural crops.

Focus on Potato Officially Launches with Zebra Chip Webcast

PMN officially launched its most recent “Focus on” topic, Focus on Potato, (FOP) on July 1, 2010. Led by Gary Secor, North Dakota State University, FOP has already gained sponsorship by 29 companies, commodity groups, educational organizations, and individuals. The initial launch contains six expert webcasts on current crop management and protection issues with the most recent on Zebra Chip Disease of Potatoes. An additional webcast will be added monthly and be publicly available. Beginning August 1, past webcasts will be deposited in a subscription archive. The site also contains a searchable database of university extension publications and other useful resources.

PMN Offers New Soybean Webcast

Soybean Aphid Scouting by Kelley Tilmon, South Dakota State University, is PMN's newest soybean presentation. Its purpose is to help readers manage soybean aphid cost-effectively through scouting and the use of treatment thresholds. Focus on Soybean features a growing list of grower oriented crop management webcasts.
