New issue of Healthy Animals:
ARS today posted a new issue of Healthy Animals, a quarterly online newsletter that compiles ARS news and expert resources on the health and well-being of agricultural livestock, poultry and fish. The current issue takes a look at some of the alternatives to antibiotics that scientists are using to enhance animal health and production. (7/19)

Florida Blueberry Growers,

Just a reminder, our fall meeting is scheduled for Oct 30, 2012 at the Trinkle Center in Plant City. If you are a vendor and would like to have a booth for the trade show please sign up now. We are going to limit space to only 60 vendors this year and we are quickly filling up. We cannot add additional space after the first 60 spaces are filled. A booth will consist of an 8 X 8 space, 6 foot table and two chairs. One lunch comes with the booth. We only have electricity available at 12 booths and only a couple remain available. If you have equipment we have plenty of space outside. The cost is $350 per booth and additional lunches can be purchased for $15. You can register and pay online through Paypal or use a credit card. To pay online simply go to our website and click on "About Us". Click on "Membership" and a drop down will appear. There you will find "Vendor Booth Registration". Add it to your cart and continue to payment. Click here for shortcut. Paypal is the company that handles credit card transactions so if you want to use a credit card you will still click on the "Check out with Paypal". This step is the one that seems to be throwing everyone. You can then enter your credit card info. Please call Sheri Brothers if you want a booth so she can put you on the list. She can also answer all of your questions. Her number is 352-455-2714. If you are mailing in your payment make sure you send it to our Bartow address. Mail sent to our old address is no longer forwarded to us.

Individual registration will begin September 1st.

The meeting will consist of basic grower sessions and advanced topics.

The summer newsletter should have arrived in your mail box in the last few days. If you did not receive one please send an email to; In that email I need your name and mailing address, no other information is needed.

The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) is one of the sponsors for the 2012 US Biochar Conference July 29 - August 1 in Rohnert Park, California. USDA Releases Agroforestry Handbook
USDA has released a practical agroforestry handbook that contains information to help establish, manage, and market agroforestry projects that are profitable and sustainable. The handbook, Profitable Farms and Woodlands, is written for underserved and limited-resource farmers and woodland owners living in the Southeast and includes five main agroforestry practices: alley cropping, forest farming, riparian buffer strips, silvopasture, and windbreaks.

Report Explores Local Food Success in the Deep South
The Wallace Center has released Increasing Farmer Success in Local Food Markets in the Deep South: Mississippi & Alabama: Challenges & Opportunities in the Fruit & Vegetable Market . The report explores on-farm, market, and infrastructure barriers that small farmers face in accessing markets for fresh, local produce in the Deep South, and shares pragmatic interventions and insights that can shape the success of developing local food systems. The 63-page report is available online as a 2.1 MB PDF file.

The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy has published Farm to Child Care: Opportunities and Challenges for Connecting Young Children with Local Foods and Farmers. Field to Market Report Says Commodity Production Efficiency Increasing
A new report released by Field to Market, the Keystone Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture, demonstrates how six commodity crops are being produced more efficiently in the United States than they were 30 years ago. At the same time, increased production to meet growing demand has resulted in greater overall resource use by many crops.

UK Releases Roadmap to Keeping Food Affordable Without Destroying Nature
The Green Food Project, a major study into how Britain's entire food system must change to keep food affordable without destroying nature, has been released by the UK's Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs.

Urban Agriculture Producing More than Food
A feature in Orion magazine profiles several urban agriculture programs operating across the country. Many urban agriculture programs are bringing healthy and diverse foods to neighborhoods where access may be lacking. Some projects are providing jobs and job training. Gardens also provide important community open space and education.

Funding Opportunities

Northeast SARE Partnership Grants
The Partnership Grant program supports agricultural service providers who work directly with farmers to do on-farm demonstrations, research, marketing, and other projects that will add to understanding of sustainable agriculture. Partnership Grants are capped at $15,000.
The deadline for applications is November 1, 2012.

Animal Welfare Approved Good Husbandry Grants
Animal Welfare Approved certified farmers and those who have submitted an application for AWA certification may apply for up to $5,000 towards projects such as mobile housing, breeding stock, and on-farm processing equipment. Slaughter plants working with or seeking to work with AWA farmers are also eligible for funding.
Applications are due by September 28, 2012.

Enhancing NRCS Program Delivery in Georgia
Georgia NRCS is making a request for proposals for outreach and related activities that will improve NRCS program promotion and delivery to new and underserved individuals, groups, and communities in Georgia. Grants will not exceed $50,000, with a required 25 percent local match. State and local governments and nonprofit organizations may apply.
Applications must be received by July 30, 2012.

Integrating Pastured Poultry with Crop Production

The National Center for Appropriate Technology presents a free informational meeting for small farms and homesteads on raising poultry in safe, productive ways, either for home use or commercial production. The August 14 event at Sandy Bar Ranch includes farmer visits, an overview on pastured poultry production, presentations on flock health, food safety, and monitoring costs. The August 15 agenda includes an overview of pastured poultry production, a farmer panel on integrating pastured poultry with crops, and presentations on flock health, food safety, egg handling, and meat-bird processing.

6th National Small Farm Conference –September 18-20

Webinar: Florida Farm to School Effort –August 7, 10am EST

(If you’re interested in Farm to School, take a look at the Florida Small Farms and Alternative Enterprises Conference program below and the Farm to Cafeteria Conference information –registration deadline has been extended!)

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services took on the responsibilities of the state’s school food and nutrition programs on January 1st of this year. As we settle in to our new home here at the Department, we are continually working to identify new opportunities and streamline best practices so that we may guide and support Florida’s school food service programs moving forward.


The Division has prepared an interactive webinar to discuss the Farm to School effort being developed at the state level and obtain feedback on how to best implement this program throughout the state.


You can join this online meeting using a program called WebEx. 


      To join the WebEx session, you must first:

1)       Determine where will you go to have computer and phone access to the presentations (preferably a quiet, undisturbed location); and

2)       Understand that you might be prompted to download additional applications to run the WebEx meeting, these downloads are necessary to view WebEx.  You may also need to adjust your computer settings to turn off “pop-up blocker” and allow some “cookies.”

Financial Agriculture Management Conference –September 9-11

The University of Florida/IFAS Extension Services is partnering with Farm Credit, Florida Nursery, Gardens and Landscape Association and several other financial organizations to bring you the Financial Agriculture Management Conference. This event is made possible through a USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant and will be hosted at the Gaylord Palms Hotel in Orlando, FL from September 9 through September 11. On July 17, USDA is proudly unveiling the 2.0 version of the  Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Compass, a digital resource detailing USDA's involvement in local and regional food. Please help us spread the word!


What is the Compass? The KYF Compass highlights USDA investments in local food systems; showcases inspiring local food success stories from around the country; and features an interactive map. The 2.0 version of the map (live on July 17) is searchable by keyword or zip code radius, easier to use than the original version and has thousands of new data points, including USDA-funded local food projects in all 50 states, farmers markets, food hubs, wholesale markets, meat processing facilities and other critical infrastructure.

Irrigation Energy Webinar Series

Delivery of irrigation water through on farm irrigation systems from ground or surface water sources typically requires the addition of energy. The amount of energy that must be added is controlled by the type of irrigation delivery system, elevation difference between the field and the water source, inches of water applied, and the land area being irrigated.


In this three part series participants became familiar with how to determine how much energy is required if all components of the system are operating at near peak efficiency. The series is presented by William Kranz Ph.D., an Associate Professor and Irrigation Specialist in the department of Biological Systems Engineering at the University of Nebraska Extension. This webinar series was supported by funding from NCR-SARE as part of a Professional Development project coordinated coordinated by Scott Sanford, Sr. Outreach Specialist at University of Wisconsin. Information is presented by a team of extension specialists in the North Central region. Access all three webinars here.
