Fungi's genetic sabotage in wheat discovered:
Using molecular techniques, ARS researchers and their collaborators have shown how the subversion of a single gene in wheat by two fungal foes triggers a kind of cellular suicide in the grain crop's leaves-and they've also developed DNA molecular markers that can be used to rapidly screen commercial cultivars for the gene, called Tsn1, so it can be eliminated by selective breeding. A new potential biocontrol for skunk vine:
A tiny beetle found in Thailand that could be used to control the invasive weed skunk vine has been identified by ARS scientists and cooperators. (7/13)

Smaller waistline, bigger immune response:
The new online edition of the quarterly newsletter "Food and Nutrition Research Briefs" reports, among other findings, that a low-calorie or very-low-calorie diet can not only lower your weight, but also boost your immune system. (7/14)

Fighting the brucellosis threat in both livestock and wildlife:
ARS scientists say vaccinating the bison in and around Yellowstone National Park with a vaccine known as RB51 could prevent the disease from spreading to nearby livestock. (7/15)

Surprising layers of complexity surrounding dietary compounds:
An ARS chemist who specializes in cancer prevention research has reported evidence that for some dietary compounds, length of exposure over time may be key to whether or not ingestion leads to a beneficial, or detrimental, effect. (7/16)
