Studying weight loss:
Weight-management studies led by USDA scientists are helping determine why some dieters lose more weight than others, and are more successful in keeping it off. The research may lead to successful, science-based strategies for weight management. (3/4) http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/pr/2013/130304.htm
Finding a fix for manure spills:
A manure spill that reaches a nearby creek or river can create a serious environmental hazard because it significantly boosts phosphorus loads in the water. Now USDA scientists and their research partners have determined how channel sediments capture and release manure phosphorus, and have identified strategies for reducing phosphorus loads from manure spills. (3/7) http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/pr/2013/130307.htm
Deterring ticks with natural repellents:
Why do birds, monkeys and other animals rub themselves with citrus and creatures like millipedes? One likely reason is because certain plants and arthropods contain natural repellents.
Scientists with USDA and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute are examining citrus compounds and millipedes for effectiveness against ticks. (3/8) http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/pr/2013/130308.htm
