Old and New Members Perform Service
"AmeriCorps Works" was the theme of this year's AmeriCorps week, held in mid-March, that celebrates volunteer service.  Several of our  Energy Corps AmeriCorps members participated in activities to help raise awareness of this program that benefits recipients of service, service members and the community at large.  Taylor Bye, our Energy Corps member in Texas, spent a day with other AmeriCorps volunteers from Catholic Charities, San Antonio Youth, and Public Allies talking to high school and college students about AmeriCorps service.  Read more...


Incubator Farm Grows New Farmers

Working to Improve Food Choices
A new incubator farm program in Onslow County, North Carolina, is up and running, thanks in part to funding and technical support provided by our Bringing New Farmers to the Table project. The Onslow County Incubator Farm program is training new vegetable and fruit farmers who can supply fresh, local food to the community.

Community partners include the Onslow County Farmers’ Market, Mount Olive College, and Onslow County Cooperative Extension Service. Free technical assistance was provided by Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and an anonymous donor gave two buildings worth an estimated $163,000.  Read more...

 

Start Your Seeds Now

Get Ready for Spring Plantingpackets of seeds
Our VISTA member, Zoe Carlberg, is already at work preparing for spring planting at our Small-Scale Intensive Farm Training (SIFT) demonstration farm in Butte, MT.  She has put together a potting mix, purchased seeds and is ready to get things growing.  A few other preparations are necessary, and you can read her full instructions for starting seeds.
