Brief biographical sketch

Dr. Qamar uz Zaman has a distinguished career in Precision Agriculture (PA).  He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK, in PA, and postdoctoral fellowships from University of Florida and Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. Dr. Zaman is recognized internationally for his accomplishments in fundamental and applied PA research. He has worked in three internationally renowned PA programs including the University of Florida, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, and Dalhousie University, Canada. He established a PA Research, Teaching, and Extension Program at Dalhousie in 2007.

Dr. Zaman invented prototype automated variable rate (VR) spraying using machine vision, for spot-application of pesticides to save significant amounts of agrochemicals (herbicides up to 80% and fungicides up to 40%) in blueberry fields. He also developed a commercial VR spreader for spot-application of fertilizer which saved 45% fertilizer. Nitrate-nitrogen concentrations in leachates draining to ground water were also decreased with VR and limited to below the 10 ppm contamination limit for drinking water.

Dr. Zaman has published 40 peer reviewed articles on PA in prestigious international scientific journals and several in national journals. He is in demand for national/international seminars and workshops and has made over 100 conference, industry and extension presentations over the past few years. He also published articles in regional and national grower’s magazines, newspapers and developed fact sheets and operational manuals for growers and machinery manufacturers’ use. His research was promoted in different national and international television channels such as CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and PBS, CTV, Express and is available on Google Video and YouTube. He was invited as keynote speaker in international seminars on PA in several countries.

Dr. Zaman is currently a visiting scientist to CREC.
