JOB DESCRIPTION: 

Leads wetland and watershed research for the Freshwater Plants Research Project. Develops projects to address priority needs relating to wetlands and watersheds. Writes grant proposals to gain support and acquire funding for projects. Conducts statewide freshwater plant research and monitoring. Plans and coordinates sampling trips, including use of vehicles, watercraft, and scientific equipment needed for data collection. Independently conducts field work requiring extended travel.  Collects, compiles, analyzes and summarizes field data related to freshwater plant research. Independently operates and maintains boats (including airboats), motors, vehicles and equipment used in the research, surveying and monitoring of freshwater plants. Completes administrative duties and responsibilities, including agency record keeping and required training. Collaborates with team member in drafting scopes of work, preparing reports and manuscripts, and presenting scientific data at meetings and conferences. Serves as freshwater plant expert on agency and interagency teams as assigned. Assists with public outreach as appropriate, performs other duties as needed to meet the work objectives of the freshwater plant research team and the Ecosystem Assessment and Restoration Section. 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

Minimum Qualifications:  A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the physical or natural sciences and two years of professional biological experience in a field or laboratory program; or a Master's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the physical or natural sciences and one year of professional biological experience in a field or laboratory program; or a Doctorate from an accredited college or university in one of the physical or natural sciences.

PREFERRED CRITERIA: 

Applicants with a Master’s degree or Doctorate and a strong background in freshwater wetland science, and experience with plant-animal interactions may be given preference. A proven track record in obtaining grant funding and experience in coordinating collaborative research is preferred.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

Knowledge of: freshwater wetlands; freshwater plant identification and ecology; data collection methods; word processing, spreadsheet, and database software; and writing grant proposals.

Skill in: safe operation of vehicles, trailers, boats, airboats and motors; computer operation and technical writing; and scientific equipment used in data collection such as Trimble data loggers, tablet PC, and GIS.

Ability to: establish and maintain working relationships with other Commission employees, agency officials and general public; work independently out of doors and in isolated locations; maintain a valid driver’s license; plan and organize work assignments; manage, analyze, and interpret scientific data.

A valid driver’s license is required.
