News & Info Brief

FLORIDA LAKEWATCH PROGRAM RECEIVES NATIONAL WATER QUALITY MONITORING COUNCIL'S VISION AWARD
The National Water Monitoring Council awarded its 2014 Vision Award to Florida LAKEWATCH for leadership in water quality monitoring and environmental protection. LAKEWATCH volunteers also received the 2014 Distinguished Service Award from the University of Florida's School of Forest Resources and Conservation.

Since the program's inception, thousands of LAKEWATCH volunteers have collected water quality data on more than 1,100 lakes, 175 coastal sites, 120 rivers, and 5 springs in 57 Florida counties.

The success of LAKEWATCH couldn't happen without contributions from many scientists, staff and volunteers across the state. However, it takes leadership to bring together such a diverse group, grow a program and keep it vibrant and pertinent, and to maintain sources of funding. The leadership of LAKEWATCH Director, Mark Hoyer, enables this important and valuable program to thrive. Congratulations Mark and everyone involved with Florida LAKEWATCH!

2014 A VERY GOOD SEED YEAR FOR LONGLEAF PINE - STILL TIME TO PREPARE YOUR SITE FOR SEED FALL
According to the US Forest Service's 2014-2015 Longleaf Pine Cone Prospectus, the regional cone crop, based on conelet counts, is very good for 2014, at 97.8 cones per tree.  The natural variation typically seen throughout the longleaf pine range is evident in this year’s data. For landowners and managers interested in natural regeneration of longleaf pine there’s still time to get some late summer burning, chopping, or herbicide done in preparation for some good seed-fall. See the full report here.
