His research deals with the sugarcane resistance to drought and disease (mosaic and smut) at the physiological and biochemical, DNA and protein, and metabolism level, photosynthetic genetics and energy cane breeding, gene cloning and expression, transgenic breeding of the sugarcane mosaic disease, transgenic detection and safety assessment. More than 17 projects were funded in more than 10 million Chinese dollars. Dr. Zhang has authored and co-authored more than 130 scientific publications, given more than 30 presentations at international and national conferences, granted more than 10 patents, and is on the editorial boards of six scientific journals.
