Tangerine tomatoes surpass the reds in lycopene study:
Besides their appealing orange color and sweet flavor, there's another reason to give tangerine tomatoes a try this year: A study led by ARS researchers has provided new evidence to suggest that, ounce for ounce, these heirloom tomatoes might be a better source of a powerful antioxidant called lycopene than are familiar red tomatoes. An "anti-suntan lotion" for hardworking nematodes:
"Fire gel" is being tested by ARS scientists as an effective way to help beneficial nematodes called Steinernema carpocapsae protect peach and other stone fruit trees from devastating borer pests without succumbing to the harmful UV rays and heat of the sun. Advancing biocrop alternatives for the Pacific Northwest:
Pacific Northwest farmers could someday be filling up their machinery's tanks with fuels produced from their own fields, according to ongoing research by ARS researchers who have been studying safflower, camelina, soybeans, mustard, canola, wheat, corn and switchgrass to assess their potential for bioenergy production.
