Matching bioenergy sites and feedstocks:
ARS researchers have figured out a cost-benefit balance between identifying the best sites for building bioenergy facilities in the Pacific Northwest and supplying those facilities with the biofeedstock needed to produce fuel. (2/15) http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/pr/2011/110215.htm
Finding a polyamine way to extend tomato shelf life:
ARS scientists are working with university colleagues on a way to extend the shelf life of tomatoes, and perhaps also improve their flavor and nutritional value, by manipulating a class of nitrogen-based organic compounds known as polyamines that act as signals and play a role in the plant's growth, flowering, fruit development, ripening, and other functions. Accessing agro/environmental model services through your "smart phone":
Soon there will be ag-related "apps" for smart phones, now that the Object Modeling System-a framework developed by ARS scientists and their colleagues for harnessing the power of cloud computing to run science computer models-is operational. (2/17) http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/pr/2011/110217.htm
