A high-tech future for fish gelatin:
Natural gelatin, extracted from the shiny skin of a seagoing fish called Alaskan pollock, may someday be put to intriguing new biomedical uses, according to an ARS chemist who's developing strong yet pliable sheets, known as films or membranes, that might be made from a blend of gelatin from the fish skins and a bioplastic called polylactic acid that's produced from fermented corn sugar. Improving soil for better lawns and gardens:
ARS scientists in West Virginia are using rural, urban and industrial byproducts to develop constructed or replacement subsoils and topsoils to build better and less-costly sports fields, raingardens and lawns on former landfills, mine lands and other degraded land. (11/9)

New hemlock hybrids that resist an invasive pest:
ARS researchers have developed more than 100 hemlock hybrids suitable for testing for their tolerance to attacks by the invasive insect known as hemlock woolly adelgid that's devastated native hemlocks in 17 eastern states, killing trees and disrupting natural ecosystems. (11/10)
