Postdoctoral Research Assistant

School of Biological Sciences

 

 

Salary in the range of £31,987 - £37,780 per annum inclusive of London Allowance

 

Applications are invited for the post of Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Behavioural Ecology. The post holder will assess the potential impacts of exposure to multiple agricultural chemicals (pesticides and miticides) on the behaviour of bees. The project will focus on honeybees and bumblebees and will involve behavioural experiments in both the laboratory and field.

 

This post is funded through the Insect Pollinator Initiative (BBSRC, Defra, NERC, the Scottish Government and the Wellcome Trust): “An investigation into the synergistic impact of sublethal exposure to industrial chemicals on the learning capacity and performance of bees”. The project brings together complementary expertise from five research groups from four different UK institutions (Newcastle University, Royal Holloway University of London, University College London and the University of Dundee). This collaboration encompasses expertise in cellular and molecular neuroscience, neuroethology and behavioural ecology, allowing us to use a systems biology approach to assess the potential impact of combinations of agricultural chemicals on the nervous system of bees. This will span from a single nerve cell to the behavioural integration of the whole colony.

 

This is a 3 year full time post available from January 2011. The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in animal behaviour/ behavioural ecology or have equivalent experience with experience of working with social insects, and have a successful publication record.

Research Technician (75% full time)

Salary in the range of £19,805- £23,337 per annum inclusive of London Allowance

 

The School of Biological Sciences, a research-led Department at Royal Holloway, University of London, requires a part time  Research  Technician to support the BBSRC funded Research work of Drs Raine and Brown working with honey and bumble bees (as part of the ‘Insect Pollinator Initiative’).

 

The post holder will be responsible for (i) rearing and maintenance of bee colonies, (ii) the care and maintenance of laboratories and associated facilities, and (iii) will support and carry out behavioural, ecological and parasitological experiments in the lab and field. 

They will also have responsibility for accurate record keeping, data entry and data management, along with providing support for postdoctoral staff, postgraduates and undergraduates. 

 

Applicants are expected to have HNC Btech (or equivalent qualifications) in relevant subjects and experience in an environmental research laboratory.

 

The is a fixed term 75% of full time post available from the January 2011 for 36 months
