Recording of 12/14/10 Videoconference on-line: U.N. Declares 2011 'Year of Forests' The United Nations has designated 2011 as the International Year of Forests to raise awareness about sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests. The U.N. created a website to serve as a global platform to celebrate people's action to sustainably manage the world's forests. Visit www.un.org/en/events/iyof2011/index.shtml to find information about an upcoming international forest film festival, a calendar of forest-related events in 2011, preparations for the observance of Forests 2011 and more. Emergency Forest Restoration Program Congress has appropriated $18 million for the Emergency Forest Restoration Program, a program that was started in the 2008 Farm Bill. This program provides funding for forest landowners who need to restore forests damaged by a natural disaster. A natural disaster includes the following: Wildfires; Hurricanes or excessive winds; Drought; Ice storms or blizzards; Floods; Naturally occurring resource impacting event; Insect or disease infestation. (FSA will work with partner Federal and State agencies to make these determinations) If you experienced one of these natural disasters on or after January 1, 2010, and you had an existing forest that has been impaired or endangered, then you can sign up at your county Farm Service Agency office (Service Center Locator: http://offices.sc.egov.usda.gov/locator/app?state=us&agency=fsa) Conservation Stewardship Program open The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has extended the ranking period cut-off date for their Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP). Producers now have until January 7, 2011, to finalize their applications; but are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. The CSP program, authorized in the 2008 Farm Bill, offers payments to producers who maintain a high level of conservation on their land and who agree to adopt higher levels of stewardship. Eligible lands include cropland, pastureland, rangeland and nonindustrial forestland. CSP self-screening checklist is available to help producers determine if CSP is suitable for their operation. The checklist highlights basic information about CSP eligibility requirements, contract obligations and potential payments. It is available online at http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/new_csp/csp.html For information about CSP or other NRCS conservation programs, visit: http://www.fl.nrcs.usda.gov or phone Jeffrey Woods, 352-338-9515. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
