Subject: [SANET-MG] June 1 deadline for Southern SARE nominations
DEADLINE LOOMING FOR SOUTHERN SARE AC NOMINATIONS
June 1 is the deadline for nominations to the Administrative Council of the Southern Region SARE Program. Southern SARE is seeking three producers, one agribusiness representative and one quality of life representative to join the Council for a three-year term beginning February, 2011. Nominees must be familiar with sustainable agriculture and its impact on the environment and rural communities. Nominees representing women in agriculture, minorities and farm laborers are especially welcome. Self nominations are especially welcomed. Currently the Administrative Council lacks representation in sustainable poultry and dairy.
The Administrative Council is the governing body of the Southern SARE program and is made up of seven producers, three NGO representatives, one agribusiness representative, one quality of life representative and a number of 1862, 1890, federal and state governmental agency representatives. The Administrative Council depends on outstanding nominees that you and your colleagues from across the region may put
forward, including self nominations. We strongly encourage you to invest the effort required to advance good nominees.
The new Council members will serve a three-year term beginning in February 2011. Duties of the Administrative Council include attendance at two council meetings each year, February and August. Each meeting is expected to last two days. For details about AC duties and conflict of interest policy go to http://www.southernsare.org/forms.htm
Criteria for Administrative Council appointment include the following:
1.Experience in the area of sustainable agriculture;
2. Demonstrated ability and willingness to help address
sustainable agriculture needs and methods; and
3. Ability to work effectively as a member of a team dealing with contemporary issues facing agriculture.
Written nominations should include:
1. A statement of the nominee's ability to work collaboratively to address sustainable agriculture needs;
2. A description of the person's interest in and contributions to sustainable agriculture;
3. A description of teamwork capabilities;
4. Confirmation of the nominee's consent to be nominated;
5. Demographic information (sex, race, type of farm or NGO, and address and telephone contact information).
To be considered, Dr. Jeff Jordan (address below) must receive your nomination by June 1, 2010. Please limit your written nomination to a maximum of two pages. Including a resume is certainly appropriate, but not sufficient without a cover letter that addresses the above items.
Mail nominations to:

Greetings, members and supporters of the SW FL Small Farmers Network. I’m sharing with you this friendly reminder concerning our 2010 FL Small Farms Conference on July 31-Aug 1, 2010. Specifically, there are only 50 days left to the deadline to file an application for a small farmer scholarship for a full or partial registration scholarship, up to a $110 value. Statewide Workshop on Conservation Easements
I am teaming up with the Conservation Trust for Florida, UF IFAS, Florida Forest Stewardship Program, UF-School for Forest Resources and Conservation, Tampa Bay Trust and the Tampa Bay Forest Working Group to put on a statewide workshop on Conservation Easements.
Please take a look at the agenda, it is very complete and filled with excellent and relevant professionals from many disciplines (note my addition of Mike Gutter, Ph.D from Family Financial Management, UF ) who will be on hand to provide detailed assistance to landowners interested in establishing methods for ensuring the intergenerational transfer of their land.
I would appreciate at it if you could promote this program to our region's CEDs and to the DEDs in the South and Central Extension Districts. Such programs as these have not occurred in Florida on a regular basis and the need for this type of information is critical during these difficult financial times.
As always thanks for your help .. Rob

"Conservation is not concerned only with the natural resources of the earth. Polk County Water School Webinar--week two
This is reminder about the Polk County Water School Webinar. You can access it at http://polk.ifas.ufl.edu. Tomorrow is a tour day for the onsite Water School participants, as we explore local impact on the Peace River Watershed. The webinar is scheduled for 3:00-5:30 (pre-taped), featuring footage from the Polk County’s Circle B Bar Reserve Nature Discovery Center on Lake Hancock; Glendale Wastewater Treatment Plant; City of Lakeland Wetland Reservation, and TECO power plant in Mulberry.
If you tuned in last week you noticed some challenges with sound, and perhaps with the view of the live footage. I eventually figured out that audience members need the handheld microphone in order to be heard, and it got a bit better as the presentation went along. Also, some of you may have had problems with screens that were too small—you may have a toggle for “fullscreen” or a button in the middle of your viewer to enlarge the screen. Finally, the power point presentations are uploaded ahead of time (when we have them), rather than captured by the camera, so just follow along with the presentation on the screen. Tomorrow we will not have a power point or a live presentation as, again, the footage will be pre-recorded.
Please forward to interested parties within and outside of Extension.
The Water School program brochure is attached in Word 2007 and as a PDF.

First Annual Entomology Field Camp
The UF/IFAS Entomology and Nematology Department will be holding its first annual Entomology Field Camp from June 21-25, 2010. Camp is open to 6th-8th graders interested in science. The first class is limited to 25 students, and is the introductory camp for what will eventually be three levels of camp for students into upper level high school. This is a day camp, so campers will need to be dropped off and picked up each day.
For five days, attendees will participate in numerous entomological laboratory and field investigations, and have close interaction with Entomology and Nematology faculty and students. All supervisors meet UF requirements for activities with minors. Cost is $175 dollars per camper, which includes all supplies, admission costs for field trips, prizes and t-shirts.
Many great activities are planned, so check out our schedule and other details at:
http://entnemdept.ifas.ufl.edu/bug_club/camp.htm
We will also be hosting up to five extension agents at no charge that would like to observe. If you are interested, please email Rebecca Baldwin at baldwinr@ufl.edu.

Bureau of Economic and Business Research Survey Design and Info for Local Governments
Good afternoon:
A few weeks ago I contacted you about the next Gateway presentation. We finalized a date for our breakfast meeting with representatives from the Bureau of Economic and Business Research, and it is Monday, May 17 from 7:30-8:30 a.m. at the Extension Office. We will provide a continental-type breakfast and coffee/juice. The presentation will be given via Polycom distance conferencing. All 11 county governments in the South Central region of the state will be participating, and we are inviting our county managers’ offices, purchasing departments, planning departments and others to participate. I will also forward to our local municipalities.
Attached is a flyer for the meeting, as well as a sampling of past surveys by BEBR. You may also want to glance at their website, http://www.bebr.ufl.edu for the following:
· Offerings from individual units within BEBR: http://www.bebr.ufl.edu/about
· Free Data: http://www.bebr.ufl.edu/free/data
· Publications Store: http://www.bebr.ufl.edu/publications/list
In speaking with other county Extension directors in Tampa Bay, there are county government units utilizing BEBR services, and perhaps there are opportunities for Polk as well.
I would like to forward this information to other division and department directors, as appropriate. Do you have suggestions for whom to target?
Thanks for your time, and I hope you can attend the breakfast on May 17,
