What's Organic About Organic? dives into the challenges that arise when a grassroots agricultural movement evolves into a booming international market. FOG Executive Director Marty Mesh, who co-produced and is featured in the film, helped form the Gainesville-based non-profit Florida Organic Growers (FOG) in 1989 after farming in nearby Archer since 1976. In its early years, FOG was a grassroots organization focused on education and cost-effective organic certification to increase farmers' access to markets, and was also heavily involved in the development of the National Organic Program regulations governing organics. Today FOG operates two programs: Education and Outreach and Quality Certification Services (QCS). The Education and Outreach Program educates producers, consumers, media, institutions and policy makers all over the world about the benefits of organic and sustainable agriculture and healthy and just food systems. QCS offers USDA National Organic Program accredited certification of entities large and small in more than 30 states and 14 countries, including farming, wildcrafting, livestock, processing, packing and handling operations. QCS also offers Canadian, Japanese, European Union, Social Justice, Aquaculture and Vegan certification.
